Biltong Pizza wheels with Cream cheese

This is the ultimate crowd-pleasing snack. Never ever has anybody not loved them. They are quick and easy to prepare. No special skills needed and absolutely fool proof!

When ever I’m asked to bring snacks to some social event, and my husband is in the nearby vicinity, I hear him, shouting from somewhere behind me… Oee yes! you can make Biltong Wiele! The hardest part is keeping him from sampling too many. Let’s be honest, he isn’t the only one it gives me sooo much joy sharing this recipe, as I know how impressed your guests will be and how chuffed you’ll feel.

You’ll need:

Rolling pin

Baking tray

Kitchen scale

Yields: 18-20 wheels

Ingredients:

1 (400g) Roll of puff pastry, thawed

100g Tomato Paste

100g Biltong Powder

1 Clove of fresh garlic, finely grated (alternatively, 1 tsp minced garlic)

100g Gouda cheese, finely grated

100g Plain cream cheese

Ground black pepper

Method:

Preheat the oven at 180°C. Grease your baking tray.

Lightly dust your working surface with plain flour. Gently roll out the puff pastry, to about 3mm in thickness. Do not make it too thin or you’ll struggle to roll it up without braking.

Combine the tomato paste and the garlic. Smear the mixture evenly onto the pastry. Add the biltong powder and then the cheese. Ensure everything is spread out evenly. Roll the puff pastry into a log. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 15minutes.

Unwrap the log and cut onto slices. Place on a baking sheet, spiral side up. Top each wheel with a teaspoon op cream cheese and add a tiny pinch of group black pepper.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and flakey. A tip that I’ve learnt through experience, eat two or three before you serve them to your guests, because as soon as you turn your back, they will be gone.
